Over 14 years ago, I spent several years working for an NGO focusing on adult education programs for Tibetans from the Amdo and Kham regions. Later, I co-founded a successful travel agency that organized nearly 500 custom journeys, photography tours, cultural excursions, and treks across Tibet and Nepal.
I have been working closely with a Local Tibetan travel agency and enterprise by indirectly helping them promote their business. I have started a new series of posts in this blog, writing about the local businesses and social enterprises to help promote their business and to support local families in becoming self-sustaining.
Once when you are in Lhasa. I strongly recommend paying a visit to them at least once.
Braille Without Borders
Braille Without Borders has worked in Tibet from 1998 to 2017 to help countless Tibetans with visual impairments. They have developed Tibetan Braille, which has played a vital role in letting the blind read and enjoy the Tibetan literature and scripture for the first time.
Besides schooling, they also train many young people in massage and started a clinical massage centre run and operated by blind people in Lhasa. Later, when this organization discontinued working, the project was taken over by the Tibet Disabled Persons Federation. This federation continues the auspicious work that Braille Without Borders has initiated.
Make the blind Massage Centre a part of your tour plan in Tibet.
In this post, I would like to bring your attention to one such blind massage centre in Lhasa. This centre employs seven blind people, and I strongly recommend that all international travelers visit them. Allow them to be a part of your dream trip to Tibet. If you have a space in your suitcase, bringing small gifts from your home country can help bring a smile to their face.
I have known Chungla for many years and visit her for the massage centre whenever I am in Lhasa. Visiting the Massage centre is a great help if you have a headache due to high altitude sickness in Tibet and an intense flight before arriving in Lhasa. I have asked Chungla to write something about her blind massage center, and the following is what she has sent to me.
