Who We Are

Though I am from the US (Seattle Area), I spent nearly 15 years living full-time on the Tibetan Plateau working in tourism, cultural preservation, guiding and community development. My travel blog, The Land of Snows, has become the leading website in assisting travelers to Tibet and other parts of the Himalaya. My website is listed in the Lonely Planet Tibet guidebook as the #1 resource for planning a trip to Tibet.

For the past 14+ years, I have been personally leading photography, trekking, climbing and cultural journeys across Tibet, Bhutan, and Nepal. Some of my past clients include Animal Planet, BBC London, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide guidebooks and National Geographic. My company, Himalaya Journey, arranges package and customized journeys through Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan All of my staff members are local Tibetans or other local Himalayan people who are all well experienced in tourism.

Please take a moment to read more about why we exist, why we focus only on ethical travel in the Himalaya, why we ONLY employ local Tibetan/Himalayan people and why you should consider using us to arrange your journey to Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan: Why Use Himalaya Journey

Professionally Guided Journeys in the Himalaya

Please look through the high quality, professionally guided journeys that I have planned for 2019. Click the links for details:

July 2019 Kham Eastern Tibet Adventure: This 2 week journey will be in the eastern Tibetan Plateau region known as Kham. Lobsang spent several years living in different areas of Kham, which is often regarded as the BEST place to experience traditional Tibetan culture. Unlike many areas of Tibet, Kham is GREEN with forests, farmland and grasslands. It has far fewer travel restrictions and is stunningly beautiful. For details on this journey, contact us at: info@himalayajourney.com

September 2019 Tibet Snow Leopard Expedition: This one-of-a-kind expedition will take place in the Mekong River Source Region of the northern Tibetan Plateau. This area is home to a large percentage of the world’s snow leopard population, as well as other wildlife including brown bears, blue sheep, musk deer, wolves, foxes, gazelle, marmots, Pallas’s cats and more. In addition to wildlife viewing, we will go to the Spiritual Source of the Mekong River. The 5th Dalai Lama declared this area to be the source and asked the local Tibetans to protect the river, which they still do to this day. More details at: info@himalayajourney.com

October 2019 Tibet Everest, Kailash and Kathmandu Journey: Lobsang will be leading this 18 day adventure from Lhasa to Kathmandu while doing some epic hiking in many of his secret places in Tibet! Along the way we will go to Everest base camp and complete the 3 day trek around Mt Kailash, Asia’s most sacred peak. This is perfect for those wanting a more active adventure in Tibet. Details at: info@himalayajourney.com

October 2019 Lhasa to Everest and Kathmandu Photography Workshop: This 15 day journey will go from Lhasa to Everest base camp and on to Kathmandu with Canadian professional photographer Ariel Estulin. We will travel at a nice slow pace while photographing many of the best places in Central Tibet. Mr Estulin will be giving teachings on photography throughout this journey, both in a group setting and individually. More details at: info@himalayajourney.com

In addition to the professionally guided journeys listed above, we also arrange high quality private journeys (click link for more info) cross Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan. As these are private journeys, they can begin any date that is convenient for you. Our private journeys require a minimum of 2 travelers. We offer package journeys, but can also modify a journey for you as well. If you don’t see the exact itinerary you are looking for, no problem! Contact us and we can work with you to customize your own travel itinerary anywhere in the Himalaya. Here are just some of the different journeys we can arrange for you (click links for details):

Tibet: 20 Days from Lhasa to Everest, Mt Kailash Trek and Guge Kingdom: The ultimate Tibet journey has clients explore the Buddhist holy city of Lhasa, including the main pilgrimage sites before setting off on the fantastic overland journey to the North Face Everest Base Camp. From there you will complete the 3 day trek around Kailash, Asia’s most sacred peak before exploring the ruins of the ancient Kingdom of Guge.

Tibet: 17 Days from Lhasa to Everest and Mt Kailash: This journey is the same as the one listed above, however, it does not include the Guge Kingdom. This is perfect for those wanting to complete the epic 3-day trek around Mt Kailash.

Nepal: 16 Day Everest Base Camp Trek: One of the most famous treks on the planet, our 16-day journey has you trek all the way up to the Nepal side Everest Base Camp. In addition to Mt Everest, you will get up-close views to many other Himalayan peaks.

Nepal and Bhutan: 15 Day Cultural Journey: This fantastic journey lets you visit both Nepal and Bhutan. In Nepal, you will explore the Kathmandu Valley and the central Nepal city of Pokhara. Next, you will fly to Bhutan and explore the highlights of Western Bhutan.

Tibet and Nepal: 13 Day Overland Journey from Lhasa to Kathmandu: Regarded as one of the best road trips on the planet, this journey will have you travel the route from Lhasa to Kathmandu. You will see many of the major sites in Tibet, including Everest Base Camp as well as explore the main sites in the Kathmandu Valley.

Tibet: 10 Day Journey from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp: This route is popular for a reason and that reason is that you get to see most of Tibet’s main sites on a 10-day journey. Explore Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse, Tashi Lhunpo Monastery and get up-close to Everest at the North Face Base Camp.

Tibet: 9 Day Journey through Central Tibet and Nam Tso Lake: Nam Tso Lake is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Tibet. With this route, you will spend the night near the lakeshore while exploring the main sites in Central Tibet including Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Karo La Glacier and Shigatse.

Bhutan: 8 Day Journey Exploring Western Bhutan: Bhutan is an amazing country with a unique culture and stunning landscape. This 8-day journey will have you explore Paro, Thimphu, Taktsang Monastery and the beautiful Gangtey Valley.

Nepal: 8 Day Journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara: There is more to do in Nepal than just trek (though trekking in Nepal is awesome!). This 8-day journey will have you visit the main sites in the Kathmandu Valley as well as the pleasant lakeside town of Pokhara. Hindu temples, Buddhist shrines, ancient cities, mountain views and more await you on this journey.

Tibet: 7 Day Central Tibet Journey: For those that are short on time, but still want to experience Tibet, this journey is for you! You will explore the Tibetan capital for 3 days and then set off through central Tibet seeing glaciers, huge mountains, traditional villages and Buddhist monasteries.

I’m interested in finding out more about your upcoming photography/cultural tours. My boyfriend and are hoping to travel to Tibet for 8-10 days in mid-July. Do you have any tours planned around that time?

    Kind regards,
    Vanora

    Hello,
Love your site. I have been accessing it for information for the past few years as I continue to try and get Tibet on my travel schedule. Thank you for all of the wonderful information.

Will you be having any photography tours in Tibet in 2017 (summer months)?

    Thanks!

I hope to tour China sometime (July, august, September, october) 2017. Fascinated by the Hymalayan Plateau. Heard some bad things about horribly long and rough drives. Wondering what exactly you do.

Can this tour be extended to include Bumthang with a flight back to Paro? I would like to do 10-15 days in Bhutan in April 2020 that would include a major festival.
