Xining is the capital of Qinghai province and is the starting point for exploring the Amdo Region of the Tibetan Plateau. Xining is also the starting point of the Qinghai Tibet Railway that goes to Lhasa. The City Nomad Guesthouse is Xining’s newest and best hostel. It is owned by a local Tibetan man named Tashi, who speaks fluent English and has worked in tourism for the past 10 years. The hostel is located in the south part of Xining’s downtown district near the Tibetan Medicine Hospital. This area is home to many thousands of Tibetans and is a fun place to stay for a few days.
The City Nomad Guesthouse has both dorm-style rooms as well as private rooms. It is Xining’s only hostel that is Tibetan-owned and in modern Tibetan design. It offers free WiFi, laundry services, breakfast, bicycle rentals and free travel information for across the Tibetan Plateau. They can also help you to arrange day trips or even multi-day trips to nearby Buddhist Monasteries, Qinghai Lake and to traditional Tibetan towns.
The City Nomad Guesthouse is bright and clean and is located in the south part of downtown Xining. It is located less than 3 kilometers from the train station and main bus station. There are plenty of small supermarkets as well as restaurant choices within a short 2 or 3 minute walk. Xining, elevation 2300 meters/7500 feet, is a great place to spend a couple of nights before exploring the remote regions of the Northern Tibetan Plateau. Xining is one of China’s most diverse cities with large populations of Muslims, Tibetans and ethnic Mongols. It is also a good place to start a train journey to Lhasa from.
